SEASONAL COLOR – Pots of pansies, primroses, and iceland poppies provide a spot of color.
CITRUS – Protect Citrus when nighttime temperatures are expected to dip below 30º. If your tree is small you may want to consider putting nets of Christmas lights on it.
ROSES – Now is the time to prune your existing rose bushes. Dormant spray afterward, and add Alfalfa meal or pellets to the root zone. Bareroot varieties are available at nurseries.
WATERING – Be sure that plants under your eaves are getting adequate water. Handwater if necessary.
VEGETABLE GARDEN – Plant potatoes, garlic and onions for summer harvest. Add an inch of chicken manure to beds that will be planted in spring. Plan your spring planting.
HARVEST – Lettuces, arugula, spinach and other greens planted in late summer. Trim off outer leaves of individual planats to the sustain the harvest.
BAREROOT PLANTING – Artichokes, grapes, berry canes, fruit trees and more are showing up at nurseries. This is a budget-wise option.
TOOLS – A quiet chore that can be a pleasant break from the holiday hubub is to clean, sharpen, and oil pruning equipment, shovels and hoes.
COMPOST – Shred fallen leaves and add to compost pile/tumbler.
